Welcome to Lone Goose Farm

Jacob Shapiro·

This land has been in my family since 1988. My father loved it here — he kept Toulouse geese on the property, watched wolves with a kind of reverence most people reserve for sunsets, and built something quiet and real on these acres.

When he passed in 2023, we came out to round up the geese. We got all of them except one. That lone goose — stubborn, independent, doing its own thing — felt like the right name for what comes next.

Why We're Doing This

I believe American agriculture is broken. We've industrialized food production to the point where most people have no connection to where their food comes from, and the land suffers for it. Lone Goose Farm is my attempt to build something different — focused on domestic, sustainable food production that works with the land instead of against it.

The Three Pillars

We're building around three ideas:

The Orchard — About ten acres of fruit trees, berry bushes, and more. We're planting heirloom apple varieties you won't find at the grocery store, along with blueberries, figs, grapes, pawpaw, serviceberries, and blackberries. The plan is a subscription-based pick-your-own model where you can come out and pick whatever's in season. The trees go in the ground this October and take about five years to mature — this is the long game.

Medicinal Herbs — High-value crops like turmeric, arnica, holy basil, and chamomile. We're working with our farmer Kirsten Simmons to experiment with what grows well on this land.

Greenery for Florists — Beautiful foliage that local florists use in their arrangements. Sea oats, dusty miller, artemisia, eryngium — the kind of greenery that makes a bouquet feel alive.

What's Next

We're in the early days. Kirsten is running test plots this spring to see what thrives. We're prepping the orchard site. And we're telling the story as we go — because building something from the ground up is worth documenting.

Follow along. We'll share the wins, the failures, and everything in between.
